In this episode of Faith and Good Counsel, we spoke with blogger “The Catholic Wife”, Katie Sciba about her recent post on the 50 Shades of Grey book series and upcoming movie. She has some compelling things to say about what it is that women (and men) are seeking when they delve into these works.
You can find Katie’s blog post, co-written with Mary Walker, here.
You know, EVERY human person is looking for love. Authentic love–one that is truly fulfilling. And that’s a great thing. It’s also a holy thing. We were made, in fact, for communion – a complete, unending physical, spiritual and emotional union with our spouse and with the Blessed Trinity. Communion is far more than a mere “relationship”. And so much more than the reductionistic view of sex as a mere hedonistic joining of two bodies for a moment of fleeting pleasure. In fact, the sexual union is the the deepest, most intimate form of communion between husband and wife, where we literally become one in every way, and in doing so, image the love and communion that spirates in the Blessed Trinity, between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
But, the father of lies is prowling and attacking us at the core of our very identity as male and female made in the image and likeness of God Who created us in love and for love…..love so deep, so intimate, so mind-blowing that it is beyond our humanness to fully experience it. #SongofSongs
As a result of the fall in the garden, we have distorted our identities and lost our belief and ability to know just how much we can love and be loved by God and by each other, with pride and selfishness leading us to use one another for our own purposes. We are mired in the toxic consequences of the sexual revolution, and now hardly aware of the ways in which we see the human person as mere pieces and parts to be used, and which never leads to the love and satisfaction that we are searching for. We were made for SO MUCH MORE!
If you REALLY want to experience the measure of love and union for which you were created, immersing in Saint John Paul II’s Theology of the Body is a must!
